Tools to Help Jump-start your Blog

Blog Talk.png

Hello guys !

Since my 1st blogiversary is pretty close, I’ve been thinking a lot about the things I’ve learnt and how my blog has evolved over this past year. And I KNOW that I still have a long way to go BUT I’ve collected some knowledge along the way so even though I’m in no way shape or form a Professional at this or a wizard-almighty-bookblogger (I’m a potato-bookblogger, thank you very much!) I thought I’d share with you some things that I tried and have worked for me and to help me sustain my blog and keep myself organized. This is for the people who are still debating whether they should take the jump -DO IT- because of how daunting it seems (emphasize on the seems) but also for all the people who can find it useful.

So without further babbling, let’s jump right into this:

tools-1

Well, you obviously need to set up your blog. May it be WordPress (which works out best for me) or another plateform. You need to start there. Getting a blog, finding a name that’s original and not too hard to remember, finding the theme, etc… But the reason I’m really mentioning this is to tell you to make your blog at your image, because people will associate your blog visual with you, so make it whatever makes YOU happy while keeping it clean and easy to navigate by making a category side bar, a research bar, a review index etc…

tools-2

They’re widely popular posts around the blogosphere. Debatably, the most popular. And even though I don’t do memes anymore I’ll forever be grateful to them because they helped me immerse myself into the community by procuring ready-to-go topics to talk about with other bloggers participating in the same meme. Tags, I still do once a week and I think they’re a great deal of fun and give you as much to talk about with others. So if you’re lost and getting dizzy just thinking of where to start posts wise, check out the memes going around and choose the one or two to that seem best to you. Here are a few meme directories:

tools-3

Canva is a free, very user-friendly and intuitive online plateform where you can easily make your graphics. All of mine are made on there, I know they’re not some intricate piece of art but I love them and they do the trick for what I want in my blog. It is perfect if you suck at graphic design -like me- and you don’t have time to learn -also like me- then go on there because you’re bound to find something to match your taste and your vision. It has built in fonts, images, shapes, lines, but you can also put in some money to get a wider choice but I’m definitely happy with the free version.

If you’re interesting in Graphic Design you could try playing with Photoshop or Gimp (the free couterpart) and learn to use them. I would if I had the time because I have a lot of fun working on my graphics.

tools-4

This is a tip I got from Reg @ She Latitude and I’ll forever be grateful for it because it has changed my blogging life. I use it to have a monthly lay out of my posts, to keep tabs on what I scheduled, drafted, what I need to write, what day I still need to find a post idea for, etc… I am also very proud of the work I’ve done on it because it’s all color coded by types of posts and I label my posts by Drafted-Scheduled and if it’s a review I add to that Read-Reading and once it’s posted I highlight it. I am so much more organized that I have this way of keeping my blog organized, my stress levels went down drastically AND I’m enjoying myself a lot more.

tools-5

My notebooks are seriously LIFE. I have 2 of them now and I’m thinking of getting a third. Here’s what they are for:

  1. Review notes. I’m seriously so proud of this one, I love writing in it and keeping it neat and pretty. I write the book titles in their actual fonts with colors matching the book. I also have little symbols for plot, characters, world-building, romance… To make it easier on myself when writing the actual review.
  2. Everything blogging. Essentially my blogging ideas. Though, starting 2017 I’ll switch to a binder because I think it’d be better to keep track of other aspects of blogging, like lists, tags and the like.
  3. This is the one I’m yet to implement because I’m waiting for the notebook to actuallt get here *drumrolls please* It’s A SIX OF CROWS NOTEBOOK and I’m so excited for it to actually be here because I’ll use to track my reading, my ever so growing TBR, the books I have, the ones I need to get, review copies, series started or the ones I yet have to start, etc…

tools-6

This is the KEY social network to advertize your blog and it’s quite… Addictive, to be honest. I LOVE IT SO MUCH! It is the best way to get your blog out there, sharing your new posts as well as old ones (Don’t spam though. DON’T SPAM!) and get to chat with your blogging friends outside of comments. It will also be easier to pour your feelings about books -and sometimes life- there, on the spot, fresh out of your brain, instead of waiting to write a proper review and by then all of that might have died down and you also might have forgotten. I’m telling you, IT’S DA BEEEEEST !!

tools-7

Facebook, Bookstagram, Bookblr… They’re all great to advertize your blog though I’m not on any of them. My Facebook account is personal, I don’t have a bookstagram because I don’t have enough physical books for it and as for Bookblr I’m still debating whether to get it or not because I heard it can get pretty addictive and spoilery on there so I DON’T KNOW. They’re still all good though!

That’s it until next time.

What are the Tools that YOU use? Do you have any other tips for beginners?

Hope you enjoyed, write to you soon.

(All Spoilers are hidden)

Well, after the way Six of Crows left me hanging, my eyes practically out of their sockets, I just had to pick up this one right away. Which I did and it blew my mind even more than the first… I just don’t know what to say. Like, really! You should see my review notes, they’re so short it’s a joke. But I’ll try. I promise I’ll do my best to make you see THE AWESOMENESS THAT THIS BOOK IS OMG! You need it in your life and let me tell you why.

Writing wise, Crooked Kingdom follows the same structure as its predecessor. It has all 6 POVS plus the first one from a nobody and the last from Pekka Rollins. It also has those flashbacks whenever they’re relevant, what I loved about that is that no matter how good we get to know the characters (aka MY PRECIOUS BABIES) there is still more to know and ways for them to surprise us. And lest no forget, holy shit! The action scenes in this book are the best I’ve read in a while, they made me feel the tension and danger as if I were living it.

So, the stories picks up around a week after (If I remember correctly) the end of SoC with the crew in more danger than ever with the whole world wanting them caught or death. It was literally them against the world and I was scared. Nina even brought it up at one point, how there was no one rooting for them, worried about them and it broke my heart a bit, all I wanted to do is scream “BUT I AM. PLEASE DON’T BE SAD!!!!”

The only problem I had at one point is that the pace slowed down drastically as the characters were cornered and didn’t know what to do, and that’s what made me doubt whether this book would be as good as the precedent one. BUT I WAS WRONG! I should never have doubted Bardugo’s genius because after that she made a huge mess of things that I couldn’t see how it would resolve itself with all of them being safe and sound <Spoiler> But I guess they weren’t all safe and sound, WERE THEY? WHY? WHY? WHYYY? Why did my precious Matthias Helvar have to die? That just didn’t make sense to me -or anyone else for that matter- HE COULD’VE LIVED! HE COULD’VE HAD GORGEOUS BABIES WITH NINA!!!! But NO. Bardugo had to go ahead and break my heart. <End of Spoiler>

Also, the last couple of chapters gave me life. <Spoiler> KAZ AND INEJ ACTUALLY HELD HANDS! THEY HELD HANDS FOR GOD’S SAKE AND HE WAS NERVOUS ABOUT MEETING HER PARENTS!!! And what she did to Pekka was hilarious, he almost pooped his pants and I was sitting here cackling like a crazy person because of how much he had if coming.<End of Spoiler>

My precious evil -and not so evil- babies go through so much development throughout the book, they grow separately -each finding a real purpose to fight for- as well as in their relationships with each other. AND OMG THE FRIENDSHIPS! I adored the group dynamic and the silly banter that could go on forever between them.

Kaz is more ruthless than ever, with each decision he makes being more cruel than the last. But at the same time, he was getting more vulnerable?!! It’s like the more he felt things the more he fought it by being worse. Add to that the fact that his scheming was beyond me, I couldn’t help gapping in awe of how pull things off so greatly. If you ask me, Nina was the most interesting character to follow in this book, the changes in her and how she held ot together through it all, still being strong, devoted and SASSY. I loved how she teased Matthias and how he responded to that, and starting to loosen up after a while, he became such a sweetheart. Another noteable character being Wylan and how he adjusted to everything, finding his marks while still seeing the best in people and in the world. Inej and Jesper I loved as much as before.

AND THE SHIPS HAVE SAAAAILED !!!!! This is all I’m going to say!! My heart was happy about how all the romantic relationships were handled.

To wrap it up, what I appreciated the most is how diverse Bardugo made her cast of characters. I know that that’s easy to implement into fantasy but we don’t see it a lot and here she was including POC, M/M romance, characters suffering from PTSD. And this made me love the book all the more.

That’s it until next time.

Did you read Crooked Kingdom? If so, what did you think?

Who was your favorite character? What did you think of the certain Something that happened towards the end?

WORD WONDERS GETS A MAKEOVER !!

New Design Announcement.png

Hello guys!

Are your eyes hurting yet from all the brightness? Ehehehe #Sorrynotsorry!

To be honest, I wasn’t going to make announcement post because I didn’t know what to say in it -and I still don’t know- but when you have blogger friends that make you realize how non-sensical it is to not write a post about it, what do you do? YOU WRITE A POST ABOUT IT! And that’s what I’m doing here, explaining a little bit of the why and the what.

nda-1

It is quite simple, I was fed up of my old design, I felt like it was dull and didn’t represent my personality the way it should. Plus I came to HATE my graphics, they felt too crowded and they just hurt my eyes. To put it in a fewer words, I was ready for a change, and if you know me at all, you’d know that if I’m not 100% satistfied with something I’d easily get bored of it and that’s what happened here. It was my first attempt at any kind of blog design and although it wasn’t bad, I learnt a lot since and felt like it needed improvement.

nda-2

Huh! Because it’s bright and bold so I feel like it’s more ME, I’m a big ball of energy that goes around flailing and shouting, in contrast with that my color scheme was bleh and I didn’t like the yellow much to begin with. Even though pink isn’t my favorite color, I fell in love with the background and decided I was going to use it and nothing else. I hesitated a lot at first because I feared it was too bright, then I thought, what the heck, I love it so why not? Plus, it complimented the fact that I wanted my graphics more minimalistic. A bold background and white graphics. That’s how I roll from now on.

nda-3

Well, EVERYTHING?! Okay, for the new comers (Welcome!), the background went from this:

desktop_2014_turqwash_dlfto this:

1-1600.jpg

The header from this:

WORD (1)

to this:

My Graphics looked like this :

and now, like this:

I also got myself a logo:

Word Wonders.png

I’ll be using only 2 fonts –Selina and Text me One– instead of the the 4 (What was I thinking?!) I used before. I will also be changing some of my post formats, especially the wrap-ups. What else is there? Mmm.. I think that’s it for now, the rest of it you’ll see while the new posts go up. The only thing I’m keeping is the theme (which is Zoren) because it’s the one that works best for me and for what I want my blog to resemble.

The perfectionnist freak in me seriously considered going back and changing ALL the graphics to match, but a girl has no time. I think that if it was summer I would have done it. Really. Haha!

That’s it until next time!

Hope you enjoyed, write to you soon.
