Top 5 Wednesday #16: Read the Book, Love the Genre

Hello guys !T5W

So today is Wednesday, this means that it is time for me to do another T5W.  It is a weekly feature created By Lainey @ Gingerreadslainey with a different theme each week. It is hosted now by Sam @ Thoughts on Tomes. For more information, you can check the Goodreads group.

This week’s theme is: GATEWAY BOOKS TO YOUR FAVORITE GENRES

I’m finally FINALLY posting another T5W, it has been a long time. 3 months to be precise (wait what?). You all know my reasons for that and if you don’t, here they are. Anyway. You know when a person asks for a recommendation to get into a certain genre and you just have a book or 2 you just want to throw at their faces, yeah, I thought so! Then, this is what this week is all about. And you know me, I can’t resist a cry for help -or recommendations. As you may or may not know, my 3 favorite genre are Fantasy, Contemporary and Historical fiction so here are my books/series:

(Image = Goodreads)

FANTASY:

SHADES OF MAGIC – V. E. SCHWAB

Duuuuh!! I’ll shove this series at anyone who mentions fantasy because this is the obvious choice to trick anyone into falling in love with it. There’s magic, thieves, princes, alternate universe, fights, what more can you ask for? It’s the perfect mix between all the elements that make a good fantasy series and this one is phenomenal. GO READ IT!

CONTEMPORARY

I’LL GIVE YOU THE SUN – JANDY NELSON

Jandy Nelson - I'll Give You the Sun

You were expecting this one, weren’t you? There’s no way I could be more predictable than this, but you know me, and you know how much I adore this book. The unique writing, the adorable characters, the family drama, the feel good ending are everything I love in a book and I’d love everyone to read it so that I can rave with a maximum amount of people. OH!! AND THERE’S A BRITISH GUY !

THE MESSENGER – MARKUS ZUSAK

Markus Suzak - I Am the Messenger

This a whole other kind of contemporary. This is a slightly darker, more settle kind as the characters are very banal, the routine almost boring but it has a kind of mystery that keeps you going until the end. There’s a moral to get out of it all and I loved it even more for that specific reason.

HISTORICAL FICTION

THE BOOK THIEF – MARKUS ZUSAK

Markus Suzak - The Book Thief

Keeping up with the predictablity theme, this is one I think you saw coming. I recommend this book because that’s the one that got me into this genre in the first place so I want people to experience that same feeling. Especially of you people like the WWII period. Highly HIGHLY recommend.

WOLF BY WOLF – RYAN GRAUDIN

Can you tell WWII is my favorite to read about? Well, it is and even though this is alternate historical fiction, it still has the facts straight so it does count. And it also answers the question: “What if Hitler had one?” While I say that we’ll be in deep shit, this book while give you a more elaborate, detailed view on that.

That’s it until next time.

What is your favorite genre? What books would you recommend to anyone wanting to read more of it?

Hope you enjoyed, write to you soon.

Top 5 Wednesday #15 : A Little Self-praise

Hello guys !T5W

This week’s theme is: FAVORITE POSTS I’VE WRITTEN

That’s GREAT ! Just GREAT ! Perfect way to inflate a narcissist’s ego -like myself- more than it already is. I am thrilled. Okay, yeah. No. I’m really hard on myself when it comes to posting because the perfectionist that I am needs everything to be right, which let’s face it, rarely happens. But well, I still have some post that I cherish more than others. So without further ado, here are the posts:

(Click on the image to go to the post)

5- LET’S TALK ABOUT … HAPPINESS

Let's talk about ... Happiness

Want to see a more serious side of me? Read my philosophical ramblings? I know you want to, don’t resist it. This is the post for you ! But more seriously, it is just a little reminder that anything could be a source of happiness even just for a few minutes.

3- 12 BOOKISH TROPES THAT NEED TO GO AWAY

MY PERSONAL (7)

HAHA. You thought I’d make a list of my own posts without any rants ? Come on !! You know me better than that. Here is a list of all the tropes that make me want to pull my hair out. There are some that can be done well, but most of the time they are trash, and you seem to agree, so YAY !!

2- MY GUIDE TO UNPOPULAR OPINIONS

Unpopular Opinions

Yet another rant, kind of ? Not really the purpose, but I still found a way to rant in this post ! It’s all about the guidelines, do’s and don’ts of unpopular opinions.

Top 5 Wednesday #14 : Myself in Characters !

This week’s theme is: CHARACTERS YOU’RE MOST LIKE.

I really like this week’s theme, because one of my favorite things to do while reading is find ways in which I’m similar to the characters so this list was really fun to come up with.

5- KAT SWARTZ – THE LUX SERIES

87f3ecb699c9f7ee40a4b81a69a544a1|| Fanart by Nita H. ||

Though I didn’t like this series much (I DNF book 2) and found Kat mostly infuriating, she was a bookblogger and obsessed with books so I cannot deny that big similarity there. I’m passionate about eveything book related and this blog is my baby and my pride.

4- CAPTAIN THORNE – THE LUNAR CHRONICLES

a7870c82c1825d6e9a6d71f1a6d3894b|| Fanart by Taratjah ||

This guy is hilarious and full of himself. JUST LIKE ME. He’s not egocentric in that obnoxious way, doesn’t take himself too seriously, cracks up jokes that he’s the only person to laugh at. He is caring and has feelings but doesn’t know how to deal with them. I’m like that, I’m always wondering: “WHAT ARE THOSE ?”

3- ISABELLE LIGHTWOOD – THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS

cf4e6606af25bba03f666c3bd8e0eaa1

I’m a badass. Okay, no. Though I  AM a bad ass (see the similarity with Thorne now?) that’s not the reason for Izzy being on this list, it’s more because of her fear of letting go and falling in love with someone. Yep, me! And not because I’m one of those people who think “Boys are all the same” and blablabla, that’s bullshit. I have trust issues. BIG TIME. And I flee before things even get close to serious.

2- MARK WATNEY – THE MARTIAN

c3a368e5b01b9f3c6744d5f1825253f5

I have that crude, sometimes inappropriate sense of humor and I completely love it. I cannot not be sarcastic, it is just impossible. That would be taking out a big chunk of who I am and leaving just the boring stuff like loyalty and ambition. Who wants THAT ? Not me, just leave me be in my little cocoon of Watney-ness (I’m making it a word, yep) living happily ever after.

1- LUNA LOVEGOOD – HARRY POTTER

7613f14e2b2d762e1445e362bfbc2159

Because Astra said so. And also because I don’t give two fucks of what people think of me. I am unapologetically happy with who I am and I cannot please everyone so I do my thing and if you like it welcome to my mumbo jumbo of quirkiness and magical worlds, if you don’t just go on with your life like our paths never crossed, okay? Okay. I own my craziness and I’ll never leave it behind just because someone isn’t comfortable with it.

That’s it until next time.

Do you see yourself in any of these characters? What other characters do you relate to?

Hope you enjoyed, write to you soon.

Top 5 Wednesday #13 : Good Surprises !

Once again this week, I’m not doing the assigned theme. This week’s topic is Authors you’d like to meet at BEA and Bookcon and since I’m not attending either any time soon and I’m quite frankly too lazy to go through the lists of authors who are going to be there, I chose to do an old one.

This week’s theme is: BOOKS YOU DIDN’T EXPECT TO LIKE.

P.s: The covers are direct links to the GoodReads pages.

5- THE ALCHEMIST – PAULO COELHO

Paulo Coelho - The Alchemist

This was my first even “grown-up” read which I picked up for the first time at 13. My mom had randomly bought it and it was sitting around the house untouched so I read the blurb and it intrigued me. I didn’t think I’d be into the whole philosophical, introspective search of self theme but I ended up loving it and I read it 2 more times since then. I also picked up the majority of Paulo Coelho’s novels some of which I loved/liked and some I didn’t.

4- VAMPIRE ACADEMY – RICHELLE MEAD

R. Mead - (#1) Vampire academy

I wasn’t in the Vampire/Werewolf phase when I picked this one up. Honestly, I never was into that whole thing but I had heard a lot of good things about this series. When I read the first book,  I wasn’t impressed and doubted I would pick the second one up but I read reviews that said that it got better with each book so I decided to give it another chance and didn’t regret it one single bit.

3- THE MARTIAN – ANDY WEIR

42662881._UX40_CR0,0,40,40_

This one I just wanted to read before watching the movie. I went into it with very very low expectations because I didn’t see how a story about a man stranded on Mars could be anything but boring I even started off not liking it at all, but once I got used to the writing and all the science, I LOVED IT. Mark Watney is the most hilarious character I’ve ever read.

2- FANGIRL – RAINBOW ROWELL

Rainbow Rowell - Fangirl 2

So, I read Eleanor and Park first and though I didn’t hate it, I didn’t love it either (I’m rereading it right now and enjoying it a lot more… Weird!) which made me very reluctant to pick another book by RR again. I’m glad I did, I absolutely loved this one and I’m planning to read a lot more of her in the near future.

1- THE BOOK THIEF – MARKUS ZUSAK

1118668

Well, well, well, what do we have here? One of my absolute favorite books which I thought I would hate because historical fiction. I have this book to thank for my love of that genre and more specifically WWII. After finishing it, I was broken and I simply needed more of that time.

 That’s it until next time.

What are some books that surprised you?

Hope you enjoyed, write to you soon.

Top 5 Wednesday #12 : Why Those Covers?

Hello guys !

T5WSo today is Wednesday, this means that it is time for me to do another T5W.  It is a weekly feature created By Lainey @ Gingerreadslainey with a different theme each week. It is hosted now by Sam @ Thoughts on Tomes. For more information, you can check the Goodreads group.

This week’s original topic is Favorite parental figures but I just feel like I haven’t read many books with involved parents in them, I could think of 2 and that’s not enough to do a T5W. That’s why I chose another one done a few months back:

This week’s theme is: TERRIBLE COVERS.

P.s: The covers are direct links to the GoodReads pages.

This topic is one of my worst nightmares. Okay, not really. It is more of a pet-peeve. One question, can I list every NA book ever? I’m exaggerating a bit, but most of them are so cliché with all the bare chests and kissing couples. No? Okay! I’ll find you some other ones, it shouldn’t be hard, right?

Disclaimer: There is going to be a lot of ranting in this post. Brace yourselves.

5- ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS – STEPHANIE PERKINS

6936382.jpg

What IS this? NO! Luckily for us -and for them- the cover of this book and its two companions got changed to the gorgeousness that they are now. More classy and subtle, thank you very much!

4- LUX – JENNIFER L. ARMENTROUT

This is another one that got a cover change, but even the new ones aren’t that great. Why did I choose to display the ugliest ones you say? Because I am mean like that *Grins*. Just look at them, I don’t even know what kind of vibe they’re supposed to give off.

3- THE DIVINERS – LIBBA BRAY

Libba Bray - (#1) The Diviners

This is actually after a cover change. Yep. All I want to ask is WHY SO CRUEL? The previous cover was so beautiful that this cover change breaks my heart, I don’t understand.

2- UNDER THE NEVER SKY – VERONICA ROSSI

sans-titredf.png

I don’t know anything anymore. This is another terrible cover change, I seriously wonder what goes through their minds to make changes like this. This cover doesn’t even make sense to me.

1- BLOODLINES – RICHELLE MEAD

Hhh. Do I really need to elaborate on this one? This is an exemple of eveything that could go wrong with a cover. I don’t like the font. I don’t like the people. I don’t like anything. And I know that everyone agrees with me on this one.

 That’s it until next time.

What are other books that you think have terrible covers?

Hope you enjoyed, write to you soon.

Top 5 Wednesday #11 : Hiding from Books !

Hello guys ! T5W

So today is Wednesday, this means that it is time for me to do another T5W.  It is a weekly feature created By Lainey @ Gingerreadslainey with a different theme each week. It is hosted now by Sam @ Thoughts on Tomes. For more information, you can check the Goodreads group.

This week’s theme is: BOOKS YOU’RE INTIMIDATED BY.

P.s: The covers are direct links to the GoodReads pages.

My oh my ! This week’s topic is a very interesting one because I don’t get intimidated by books easily, I’ll dive head first in any book any fiction novel you hand me but there are some few exceptions to that rule. There’s first the 700pages (more like 600) mark, if a book is over that I feel like I’d drawn in it, ad there’s also High Fantasy, to me, it is like that guy who loves looking at dogs but is scared to death to approach them. Yeah, that’s me. So, that’s mostly what this list will contain :

5- AN EMBER IN THE ASHES – SABAA TAHIR

Sabaa Tahir - An Ember in the Ashes

Hhhh. You’re going to laugh. Wanna know why? Because I don’t have a reason for this one. It just intimidates me, okay? I swear I don’t even understand it myself, so don’t even try.

4- YOU – CAROLINE KEPNES

51QVphIQKqL

Internal conversation with me, myself, and I: This book is so creepy. – Yes, but it sounds so fascinating. – But, it is so dark. – Oh, shut up, you hypocrite, you love dark books (sometimes). – But, HE IS A STALKER.- Okay, but … Yeah, I admit, it’s going to give us nightmares.

No seriously, I’ll eventually gather enough courage to pick it up.

3- Outlander – Diana Gabaldon

SO LONG. Why? Just whyyyy? I’m dying to read it because I love the premise but the length has been discouraging me everytime. Every book is freaking 800 pages or longer. Ain’t nobody got time for that. (Except maybe in the summer haha)

2- MISTBORN – BRANDON SANDERSON

68428  68429  2767793

Or every Brandon Sanderson book ever. Because High Fantasy. Don’t get me wrong I LOVE Fantasy, but I’m more into Urban Fantasy than High Fantasy. Actually, I can’t say that, because I’ve never read a High Fantasy novel before (Or did I ?) I want to though. And I’m going to. Soon. I promise.

1- A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE –  GEORGE R. MARTIN

George R.R Martin - (#1) A Game of Thrones  George R.R Martin - (#2) A Clash of Kings  George R.R Martin - (#3) A Storm of Swords  George R.R Martin - (#4) A Feast for Crows  George R.R Martin - (#5) A Dance with Dragons  George R.R Martin - (#6) The Winds of Winter  George R.R Martin - (#7) A Dream of Spring

Again, 1000 pages. What the hell? I’m obsessed with the tv-show (24th PLEASE COME FASTER) and I know it is utterly different from the books and I WANT to read the books, but the page count is overwhelming.

 That’s it until next time.

What are some books that intimidate you?

Hope you enjoyed, write to you soon.

Top 5 Wednesday #10 : No Taboos !

This week’s theme is: BOOKS WITH HARD TOPICS

P.s: The covers are direct links to the GoodReads pages.

I don’t even know why some matters are considered as “taboos” and are rarely spoken about. Every topic should be tackled. Sure, some more delicately than others but either way, things have to be mentioned, discussed and acknowledged as non-negligible parts of today’s society. That being said, here’s the list of books that go beyond the boundaries that narrow minds set that I came up with:

5- ME BEFORE YOU – JOJO MOYES

Jojo Moyes - Me Before You

Yes, I know this book made last week’s list but, BUT I just had to mention it here too because most of people think this is a romance and that’s it, but no. Me Before You deals with life and how to live it to the fullest and the CHOICE of living it or not. To put it in fewer words it tackles with Eutanasia.

4- ELEVEN MINUTES – PAULO COELHO

Paulo Coelho - Eleven minutes

I read this a very long time ago, I was around 13, and I realize now that it was highly inappropriate for the barely-teenager that I was. It tackles Prostitution. It is the story of a prostitute, her daily life, her struggles and everything that comes with her train of life.

3- THE GIRL IN 6E – A.E TORRE

A. R. Torre - The girl in 6E

I went a little bit out of my comfort zone with this one. I expected to find myself in front of an erotica with a mystery around the main protagonist’s blood lust. But HELL NO ! The Girl in 6E is not that, it is Pedophilia my friends, and let me tell you, I had a blood lust of mine too.

2- WHAT WE SAW – AARON HARTZLER

Aaron Hartzler - What we saw

This is on my to-read list for 2016 and I yet have to get to it. I don’t know much about it other than it deals with Rape inside a high school and how people should speak out instead of feeling ashamed and labelling it as taboo.

1- FORBIDDEN – TABITHA SUZUMA

Tabitha Sazuma - Forbidden

I believe that this book is one of its kind. It talks about Incest. No sugar coating, no turning around the main issue, no nothing. It is heart-breaking, emotionally tiring and depressing BUT it is beautifully written and worth the read if you’re not too uncomfortable with the subject.

That’s it until next time.

What are some other books that deal with hard topics?

Hope you enjoyed, write to you soon.

Top 5 Wednesday #9 : It’s raining man !

This week’s theme is: RAINY DAY READS

P.s: The covers are direct links to the GoodReads pages.

In general, on days when the sky is pouring I like to read contemporary. Yep. That’s me. And not whatever contemporary I can get my hands on, mind you. It has to be on one of the extremes of the emotional scale. The book has to either leave me with warm fuzzy feelings inside or leave me heartbroken, snorting and ugly crying ’til the late hours of the night (Okay, I’m not a big crier, so I might be exaggerating, but you get the point). Here are some of the books that fit one of the descriptions above :

5 – THE STORYTELLER – ANTONIA MICHAELIS

Antonia Michaelis - The Storyteller.jpg

Oh man ! This book is so dark and twisted but it is SO good. It is mysterious, creepy and mostly tragic. I read it in the beginning of this years and I remember being so sad and depressed at the end of it. Perfect for those rainy days when your mood matches the sky.

4- SEVEN DAYS  FOR AN ETERNITY – MARK LEVY

Marc Levy - Seven Day for an Eternity.jpg

This is a  “Love conquers all” type thing. I read it in the perfect setting actually. It was a gloomy winter afternoon, I was buried in my bed under a ridiculous amount of blankets. And I liked it for what it was. A quick, easy, fun read.

3- ME BEFORE YOU – JOJO MOYES

Jojo Moyes - Me Before You

Need I explaining this one? Everyone knows it, everyone loves it. (almost? I yet have to read a negative review) It is a heartwarming/heartbreaking read. Yes, it does both. No, it doesn’t make the hard parts bearable. Yes, you are still going to cry. No, it’s not going to go easy on you. If you’ve been following me for more than 2 weeks then you already know my thoughts on it, if not here they are.

2- FANGIRL – RAINBOW ROWELL

Rainbow Rowell - Fangirl 2

AAAAGH ! I can’t keep myself from fangirling everytime I mention this book (More fangirling over here). It is just so frigging cute. It holds a really special spot in my heart and I don’t have a reason for it, it just does. Or do I ? Can Levi be enough of a reason ? Yes? Well I say that he can because I can do whatever I want.  *Sticking my tongue out like a mature person*

1- THE BOOK THIEF – MARKUS ZUSAK

Markus Suzak - The Book Thief

You were warned my friends ! I told you many many times that I am obsessed with this book and that it wasn’t the last time you were going to hear about it from me. If you haven’t read it, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ? Just go pick it up right now, for heaven’s sake or I’ll hunt you down. I will find you. And I will make you sit and read it.

That’s it until next time.

What are some books that you love to read on rainy days ?

Hope you enjoyed, write to you soon.

Top 5 Wednesday #8 : Worst of the Best !

Hello guys !T5W

So today is Wednesday, this means that it is time for me to do another T5W.  It is a weekly feature created By Lainey @ Gingerreadslainey with a different theme each week. For more information, you can check the Goodreads group.

This week’s theme is: YOUR LEAST FAVORITE BOOK IN YOUR FAVORITE SERIES

P.s: The covers are direct links to the GoodReads pages.

So, I’m kind of annoyed ! I tried to do this post a butt-load of times and WordPress kept acting up (Thanks for that buddy !), telling me that the image format wasn’t supported, what the fuck ? It is the same format I use on all of my pictures dumbass! Whatever. It just drove me crazy before FINALLY wanting to work. My rant ends here haha. Let’s get on with the list :

5- VAMPIRE ACADEMY (#1) – VAMPIRE ACADEMY SERIES

81EP-oUzgaL.jpg

To be perfectly honest, I almost stopped reading the series with this one, I liked the premise but some parts of it were really predictable and it started pissing me off. Luckily it was summertime and I read one book a day or more so I decided to give book 2 a shot and I LOVED IT !

4- OUTPOST (#2) – RAZORLAND

Ann Aguirre - Outpost

This series is PHENOMENAL. Or at least that’s how I remember it, because I read it more than 3 years ago. If I recall correctly, the main character was a bit winy in this one and that took a little bit off my enjoyment. Regardless, I really really loved it.

I am a little shocked that not many people I know talk about it because it is SO good, which reminds me: I need to re-read it. Plus, I saw on GoodReads that there was some kind of spin-off scheduled for Spring 2017 (Vanguard) so all the more reasons to dive back in.

3- CITY OF FALLEN ANGELS (#4) – THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS

Cassie Clare - (#4) City of Fallen Angels

I hopped on the Shadowhunter train a little late, as I read this series in the beginning of this year, and enjoyed every last bit of it, including this book. The reason it is my least favorite is because it is a little slower than the rest and drags a little but on the other hand it focused on Simon. SIMON. And I adore him.

2- THIS MAN (#1) – THIS MAN TRILOGY

Jodi Ellen Malpas - (#1) This Man

My Oh My ! This series is the steamiest thing I’ve ever read in my life. The first book was the one I liked the least because it was too focused on the physical attractionwhich believe me when I say, it is HOT – rather than developing the bond. At some point, I needed more than it offered. It is okay though, the other two books made up for it.

1- HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN – HARRY POTTER

9781408855676_309040

Shocker ! Harry Potter made the list haha. Okay, it is no surprise either that it is at Number 1. I read this AGES ago, like a decade or something and I still get excited anytime there is something HP related. Since it was so long ago, I can’t remember why it is my least favorite one. All I know is that it was. Which means I need to re-read it ASAP. I scheduled it for a marathon  in the beginning of the summer, anyone to come along for the ride ?

By the way, I’m fangirling sooooo hard about the new covers right now. They are to die for.

That’s it until next time.

What is your least favorite book in your favorite series ?

Hope you enjoyed, write to you soon.

Top 5 Wednesday #7 : Buzz Words !

Hello guys !T5W

So today is Wednesday, this means that it is time for me to do another T5W.  It is a weekly feature created By Lainey @ Gingerreadslainey with a different theme each week. For more information, you can check the Goodreads group.

This week’s theme is: BOOKS YOU DNF

So, I only did not finish one book in my life which was The Man who Wanted to be Happy by Laurent Gounelle. The reasons I don’t DNF books are mainly :

  1. I’m pretty good at picking up books I know I’ll enjoy
  2. I’m very patient with books even when I don’t like them
Since, this is nothing even close to a list, I chose to revisit a theme that was done before I joined the meme, which is : BUZZ WORDS
“A buzz word is a word that, when you hear it used to describe a book, you can’t help but go running to get said book.”
5- WWII
111efa572b6f910e3dc8deaecf162df4.jpg
The Book Thief (Art: Rudy Steiner)
That period fascinates me so much. I could read about it endless amounts of times without ever getting tired or bored of it and that’s because so many things went down in that time and there are so many sides of the same stories that it is hardly ever the same thing.
4- TIME TRAVEL
95cbbed1b2dfe1f66e9507a99b7df194.jpg
A Darker Shade of Magic (Art: Victoria Ying)
I think this is a universal one. There’s just something about time travel that pulls me like a magnet. Whenever I hear about a book with some sort of time-traveling in it, I mark is as to-read in Goodreads. That might be the reason why that shelf is growing exponentially, Oups?

Fangirl (Art: ?)
Best-kind-of-love-stories you mean ? I love them so so so much, because if you ask me, those are the most realistic. We get to see and experience the different stages of the relationship from its very beginning, watching the characters get to know each other, fall in love with the little things as we fall in love along with them. Amazing experience.
2- RETELLING

The Lunar Chronicles (Art : Anailui)
It could be any kind of retelling. Of any fairytale that exists out there. You name it, I want it. I gotta have it. I just love them so much because I am a fairytale junky and getting to read my favorite ones over and over and over again in different timelines, different places, with different characters is just the best thing in the world.
1- BROMANCE

Main reason I fangirl about any book EVER. Haha. I’m a sucker for solid friendships but those between two boys make me swoooon *-*. It is just so endearing to see them care about each other so much and you can see it in their actions not necessarily in spoken words.

That’s it until next time.
